The spanish coastal town of Altea

Welcome to this new blog post! Sun, beach and sea. Are you ready for summer but don’t know where to go? I might have the right destination for you: the small town of Altea in Spain.

My travel to Spain

In the summer of 2023, I spent a week in Spain after my trip to Norway. It was quite an contrast to travel from the cold north to the warm south, but it was definitely worth it. In Spain, I traveled from Alicante to Altea and spent the time there relaxing on the beach and exploring the city a little more closely.

The beautiful city of Altea

Altea is a spanish coastal town on the Mediterranean and has a population of just over 20.000. In summer the temperatures are quite high, but the cool water makes it bearable. Today the town lives mainly from tourism. Altea is located on a hill, on top of which stands the church „La Mare de Déu del Consol“.

La Mare de Déu Consol

This beautiful church can be seen from afar as it is located on the highest point in the city. The blue domed roofs immediately catch the eye. The church is fascinating not only from the outside, but also from the inside. The interior is richly decorated with gold.

In front of the church there is a large square where crowds often gather during the day when the weather is nice. If you want to avoid many other tourists, you should visit the church in the early morning hours – but it should definitely be on your list when visiting Altea.

The beaches of Altea

Altea has a coastline of several kilometers. Accordingly, there are also many beaches next to each other. However, some of them are pebble beaches. There are also many shops, bars and restaurants along the beach. The beaches are very clean, as is the water. However, jellyfish can sometimes appear near the beach. Nearby there is also a harbor, where you can book a boat tour.

Miniature golf

Between Altea and the town of L’Albir, further south, there is a mini golf course („Mundigolf“). Entry is not particularly expensive and you can spend a lovely afternoon there. At the entrance you can buy refreshing drinks and ice cream to cool off as well. The golf course is just over half an hour’s walk from Altea. It is very easy to get there, you just have to follow the coastline.

Explore the streets of Altea

Several alleys branch off from the main square („Plaza de la Iglesia“). In the alley „Carrer Sant Miguel“, you can find many souvenir shops, but also some fashion shops. In the alley „Carrer Major“ there are many fashion shops, too. In general, there are many restaurants and bars in the city center and at the beach. But I must also note at this point that there are a lot of crowds, especially in the evenings.

Some tips

The streets in Altea are very narrow. You can only get to the city center on foot anyway. Accordingly, I recommend not renting a car, but taking either public transport or taxis. In Altea itself, everything is easily accessible on foot. It is about a quarter of an hour’s walk from the city center to the supermarket „Mercadona“.

For all „Charlie and the Chocolate Factory“ fans, there is also an ice cream parlor called „The Ice Cream Factory“ a few meters from the main square in Altea. The ice cream parlor is built in the style of the chocolate factory and the ice cream tastes delicious.

Map

As a little additional overview, I have made a map with some sights that I can highly recommend if you only have a limited time in Berlin. Feel free to take a look:
