Practical Information

What is the ideal lenght of stay for this journey?

The ideal lenght of stay in Patagonia is 7-10 days. This allows enough time to experience the region’s highlights, whether you prefer a scenic self-drive itinerary or a more immersive hiking adventure across Chile and Argentina.

Travelers who enjoy slower-paced exploration or extended trekking may consider 10-14 days.

When is the best time to travel?

The best time to visit Patagonia is during the austral summer (December to February), when temperatures are warmest and daylight hours are longest – ideal for hiking and outdoor activities.

In general, November through March offers the best balance of accessible trails, moderate temperatures (40°F – 70°F), and active wildlife.

  • Summer (December-February): Peak season. Warmest temperatures, but also strong winds and more visitors. Excellent for hiking in Torres del Paine and glacier viewing.
  • Shoulder season (October-November, and March-April): Fewer toursits and beutiful scenery. Spring brings wildflowers, while fall offers stunning colors.
  • Winter (June-August): Very cold, and some accommodations and tours close. However, it is ideal for skiing and for travelers seeking solitude.
What travel documents or visas are required?

Passport: A valid passport is required for international travel. Many countries require at least six months’ validity beyond your planned stay.

Visas: Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Some travelers must obtain a visa in advance, while others may receive a visa on arrival. We will inform you about the current entry requirements before departure.

Chile: Upon arrival, travelers receive a small tourist card (Tarjeta de Turismo), which must be kept with the passport and presented upon departure. Hotels may request this document to exempt foreign visitors from the 19% local tax.

Argentina: An entry stamp (and sometimes a landing card) will be issued upon arrival. Keep all entry documentation with your passport until departure.

Border Crossings: When crossing between Chile and Argentina – common on Patagonia itineraries – new entry stamps and/or tourist documents are issued at each border.

Minors: Children under 18 traveling alone or with only one parent may require a notarized authorization letter.
