A famous World Heritage Site in Austria

Known for its scenic location and historical significance, Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut region of Austria is a World Heritage Site. In this blog post you will find out more about this special place.

Tourist hotspot?

Over the years, more and more people became aware of Hallstatt. The place started suffering from mass tourism. The people in charge are trying to limit the number of travel buses and visitors – small successes are already visible. However, large crowds still visit the small village.

Accordingly, it is more than recommended to visit Hallstatt in the off-season. This time is usually in spring/early summer and fall.

Hallstatt

Hallstatt is located at the lake „Hallstätter See“ in the Austrian Salzkammergut. An important part of the area are the former salt mines with an underground salt lake. It can be easily reached with the Salzbergbahn. Additionally, at the top a unique view over Lake Hallstatt awaits you. It is also interesting to know that the Disney film “Frozen” was inspired by Hallstatt.

Fairytale alleys

You can find numerous Cafés and shops while walking along the 16th century alleys and Alpine-style houses. Basically, it’s no wonder that so many visitors are drawn to this place.

If you follow the main street called „Seestraße“, which runs directly between the lake and the houses, you have wonderful views of the breathtaking surroundings.

What Hallstatt has to offer

Hallstatt has a world heritage museum, several accommodations, inns, restaurants, souvenir shops and historic churches. The village is also characterized by its colorful houses, narrow streets and many plants and flowers between the houses.

Surroundings

Further up the mountain you can enjoy a wonderful view over Hallstatt, the lake and the mountains on the other shores. If you follow the paths between the houses that lead up the mountain, you get to the Hallstatt waterfalls. At the end of the street „Kirchenweg“ there is a parking lot from which you can see the waterfalls.

Grub Castle

On the eastern shore of Lake Hallstätter See, a castle stands out among the trees. The Grub Castle was built in 1522. The historic building has had several owners over the centuries.

The following legend surrounds the castle: At a wedding party, two counts fought over a girl on the ice of the frozen lake. The ice collapsed and they drowned. The accident was commemorated by a pillar in the castle.

Today the castle is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside. Access is possible via the east bank hiking trail of the lake „Hallstätter See“, which was built in 1986, or by boat from the lake.
