An underrated destination

The most famous tourist destination in Hungary is the capital Budapest. However, there are many more treasures waiting to be discovered in the country. In the rural areas you can find numerous beautiful natural landscapes without large crowds of tourists. A good example of this is Tihany.

Tihany – a hidden treasure

The Tihany peninsula is located at Lake Balaton, with the beautiful town of the same name and an amazing landscape all around that offers numerous hiking routes.

Lake Balaton

Balaton is the largest inland lake in Europe with a length of almost 80 kilometers. It is a popular holiday destination for the locals, but also for some international travelers.

Since the lake is not particularly deep and can therefore be easily warmed by the sun, the water temperatures are pleasantly warm in summer. All around the lake there are many towns and beaches.The hiking routes in the area, especially on the Tihany peninsula, offer wonderful views over Lake Balaton and the vast landscapes that stretch to the horizon.

Hiking trails

The Tihany Peninsula is relatively hilly and covered in large areas of forest. The path is correspondingly more demanding on the hilly parts, but can be easily managed with a few breaks in between. The views that you can enjoy during the hike are definitely worth the effort.

Hiking trails lead around the peninsula with good views of Lake Balaton. You also pass many vineyards. You can enjoy relaxing hours in nature and maybe even have a picnic with a great view of the landscapes that stretch out in front of your feet.

Vineyards as far as the eye can see

Since there are many vineyards in this region, the selection of wine is just as large. Local wines are offered in all nearby restaurants and shops.

There is also a watchtower lookout point on the peninsula that offers breathtaking views. A longer hiking trail leads past the tower down to the vineyards.

The city of Tihany

The charming little town of Tihany is home to many historical monuments and natural treasures. One building that immediately catches the eye is the baroque abbey, which was founded in 1055 and with its two towers is still symbolic of Tihany today.

Along the narrow streets you can find many craft shops. Numerous restaurants and cafes are also easy to find – many of them with a view of the lake.

Landscapes on the peninsula

As mentioned, the hilly landscape in the area is populated with dense forests – there are also some higher hills with stone cliffs. Between the hills you can discover small villages or the lake.

In this landscape you sometimes no longer have the feeling of being in Hungary. The landscape is incredibly beautiful and you have to see it with your own eyes.
